WELCOME TO CAMP COCKER RESCUE, ELSA!
Elsa is a beautiful adult female Cocker Spaniel. Presumed to be a hit-by-car dog, she was rescued from the LA County Carson Shelter on January 11, and taken directly to the VCA in anticipation of orthopedic surgery.
Elsa was picked up by animal control with duct tape wrapped around a fractured leg. :( The shelter sent her to an outside vet for x-rays and removal of the duct-taped bandages, which were replaced with a soft cast while she awaited further treatment.
Elsa saw a surgical specialist who repaired her radial ulna fracture, and she is now receiving specialized post-op physical therapy in her foster home with Hershey & Violet.
Elsa has been sweet and friendly with her foster-siblings - and all of her care providers. What a good girl! Her age estimate* is about 6-8 years old, and she weighs about 22 pounds.
*** FOSTER UPDATE 11/15/24: Elsa is an incredibly sweet lap dog who would love nothing more than to be by your side 24/7. She’s very affectionate once she gets to know people, though her first meeting requires a calm and slow introduction to help her feel comfortable. After a few hours, once she feels secure, she’ll come to you and gently ask for lap time.
Elsa does get stressed when she sees people passing by or hears large trucks, especially when she’s in the car. But she loves outings and will stay calm if you carry her while shopping. She’s the perfect companion for a day of shopping and a relaxed lunch—while she loves food, she’s polite and doesn’t beg at the table.
Because of her caution around strangers and her tendency toward separation anxiety, Elsa would thrive best in a quiet home with someone who’s often there, and without young children, as sudden movements can startle her. At night, she’ll happily sleep by your side, and during the day, she just wants to curl up on your lap.
UPDATE: Elsa will get her 8-week-post-op x-rays on March 17, and will then be ready to move to her forever home - so don’t delay in getting your applications in for this very special girl! Elsa will need once-a-week physical therapy sessions, which will be sponsored by Camp Cocker, for 8 weeks following her adoption.
UPDATE #2 (3/20/23): Elsa’s 8-week post-op xrays show the need for a bone graft to strengthen and secure the break in her ulna. So the process will begin again, with surgery, followed by 8 weeks of physical therapy, and another set of post-op xrays. In the meantime, Elsa is a trooper, and as good-natured as always!
*UPDATE #3 (10/2/24): After a couple of setbacks, this brave girl is finally ready for adoption!
