SCROLL DOWN FOR THE LATEST UPDATES ON PATRICK:

  • Patrick is a Freedom Flyer from South Korea. He arrived at LAX from South Korea on Monday, 9/27/2021.

  • Patrick is estimated to be 6-8 years old, and weighs 24 lbs.

  • Patrick has been described by his S Korean rescuers as being a sweet, friendly and silly male Cocker Spaniel. We also now know that he’s all that - and he’s quite the snuggler!

  • Patrick had ear ablation surgery in S Korea, and is deaf in both ears. He has also apparently been “de-barked” as he does not appear to have the ability to bark. Neither of these seem to have any affect on his sunny disposition!

  • Patrick has an as-yet-undiagnosed intermittent raspy airway issue that is currently being treated by a Veterinary Specialty Internist. The issue may be an allergic response - or it may be the presence of scar tissue in his upper airway as a result of having been de-barked. He is just beginning a bronchodilator regimen as part of the diagnostic process. (See below for updated information on Patrick’s breathing issue.)

  • Patrick is being fostered in Northern California.

*** PATRICK’S FOSTER PARENTS HAVE ADDED QUITE A BIT OF INFORMATION SINCE THEY INTRODUCED HIM INTO THEIR HOME:

  • Patrick’s wheezing/coughing episodes start as soon as he gets excited or worked up. Whether it's asthma or scar tissue from his de-barking surgery is still unclear. The bronchodilator trial did not seem to make any difference, so it has been discontinued. The breathing episodes don’t seem to slow him down or make him uncomfortable, and it doesn't seem like he's struggling for air at all, which is good. Finding ways to keep him calm have resulted in many fewer episodes than when he first arrived.

  • Patrick is slowly learning that pee and potty needs to be outside -- we think he knows that when he's outside, he can pee and potty freely, but he hasn't quite gotten that he can ONLY pee and potty outside. He's had a few accidents inside.

  • He loves all humans! He is the absolute cuddliest dog with any and all humans, even strangers! He'll go up to people at the store and want pets from them. He likes to come and sit with his butt on your foot or against you!

  • He does very well being picked up and held.

  • He also does well around children. (Note that caution should always be taken with Cockers and young children!)

  • Patrick doesn't love other dogs & cats as much as humans - usually just ignoring them. If there's too much dog or cat energy surrounding him, he may bark (in his de-barked voice) to make his presence known!

  • We’ve observed no food/toy resource guarding!

  • He likes to play tug and fetch, although he doesn't always come back with the toy.

  • Patrick is super food motivated and will beg (put his front paws on you/the chair/the dining table) anytime you're eating. We are working on this, and we think he is slowly starting to understand that sitting quietly will get him more than jumping up.

  • Definitely a counter surfer -- will steal anything he can get his paws on, including trying to eat the cat's food

  • Crate -- he will bark when first placed into the crate, but quickly gives up and settles and falls asleep until you let him out again. At this point, we only crate him when we leave the house. He sleeps on the bed with us at night

  • Walking - Gets reeeeally excited for walks and wants to explore everything. He gets scared of random objects (such as the fire hydrant), but mostly just wants to smell and pee. He does pull on the leash quite a bit. We're working on this, but not too much progress yet.

  • At night he pretty much just passes out and sleeps, and snores, until you wake him up!

  • He knows Sit and Shake. We are slowly working on additional commands but it's proving difficult despite his food motivation, especially since he cannot hear vocal cues. We will keep working on it!
