WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT PETEY:

  • Petey is a gorgeous black & white male Cocker Spaniel, relinquished by his owner’s family after the owner’s passing.

  • Petey is 6.5 years old and weighs 34 pounds. He has lived his entire life since puppyhood with his owner who recently passed away suddenly.

  • Petey didn’t get much socialization with other people or dogs during his previous life, so he will need to be gently socialized and introduced to new experiences.

  • Petey is skittish when he meets new people, and will bark and hide behind someone familiar. Once he sees that the new person means no harm to him, he warms up, but it takes time.

  • A big part of Petey’s skittishness is the fact that he is deaf and startles easily. Unless he sees it coming, everything is a surprise to him.

  • Since his owner’s passing, Petey has been cared for by extended family in a house full of kids who are running around and changing direction constantly, which has proven to be a challenge for Petey’s ability to relax. Therefore, a home without young kids would be best.

  • The family also has a 10 lb chihuahua - and while they don’t cuddle or hang out, they coexists well together. A home with another dog who can set a good example for him regarding trusting people would be ideal. He has been to the dog park and a doggy daycare, and does great with dogs of all sizes.

  • Petey needs a patient owner who can commit time and energy to training with hand signals due to his deafness. He loves walks but is a bit of a tugger, and loves to chase a squirrel up a tree if he gets the chance.

  • He is house trained but has been accustomed to being able to come and go in the backyard, so a home with a safe secure yard would be ideal.

  • Petey loves car rides and going on adventures, despite his skittishness. He is hyper alert when he is awake, and loves exercise, exploring the backyard, and watching for the mailman.

  • He sleeps through the night in his dog bed and isn’t bothered by any noises once asleep because of the deafness.

  • Petey’s people tell us: “Petey’s a sweet pup and deserves someone who can give him a great second chapter of life in a calm environment where he can truly relax. He would do great as an only dog or with a dog sibling. A home with a slower pace and regular routine would be best. He wasn’t given the chance to learn how to really be a dog in his prior life, and he’s got a lot of love to give. We’ve tried really hard to make it work with our family, but with our schedules and people coming and going, it hasn’t been fair to Petey. We love him but know that we aren’t what’s best for him, and he can make someone really happy if given the chance.” ♥️

  • Petey is in the Los Angeles area
