SWEET BEAUTY! AS BETTY’S ONLY BLACK (WELL, MOSTLY BLACK) PUPPY, BEAUTIFUL MAEVE STANDS OUT IN A CROWD! SHE’S A SWEETIE AND HAS BEEN A BIT MORE MELLOW THAN THE OTHER PUPPIES. YESTERDAY (4/1) WE LEARNED FROM OUR VETERINARIAN THAT SHE HAS A SIGNIFICANT HEART MURMER, WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN CONTRIBUTING TO HER MORE MELLOW MANNER.
OUR VET SUSPECTS THAT MAEVE MIGHT HAVE WHAT’S CALLED A PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS (PDA). A PDA STARTS AS A NORMAL OPENING BETWEEN THE HEART CHAMBERS WHEN THE PUPPY IS IN UTERO. THAT OPENING IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW THE BLOOD TO CIRCULATE THROUGH THE PUPPY’S BODY WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE LUNGS. WHEN THE PUPPY IS BORN, THE LUNGS EXPAND, AND SIGNAL THE OPENING TO BEGIN CLOSING. BUT SOMETIMES, IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY - THE OPENING REMAINS PATENT, AND IT WILL NEED TO BE SURGICALLY CLOSED TO FACILITATE THE CIRCULATION OF OXYGENATED BLOOD THROUGHOUT THE PUPPY’S BODY.
We were very fortunate to get a cardiology appointment for Maeve today (4/2) to learn exactly what her condition is, and how it will be treated. Please check back here later today to learn more. All of this, of course, calls for donations if you’re able to contribute. As we always say, any amount makes a difference, and is very much appreciated!
4/2/24 6:30PM UPDATE: Maeve had her EKG and a PDA was confirmed. She can’t have surgery for two months, she needs to grow more. Signs to watch out for are coughing, any sign of heart failure. If that happens, they will do the surgery sooner. Ideally they would like to see her weigh at least 3.5 kgs (7.7 pounds) before performing the surgery.
There is a 5% chance of complications during surgery, and 95% chance of success!! If successful she can have a normal life (no heart meds). Her activity level can be normal for now. As these things go, this is really good news!
The estimated cost of surgery is 8K to 10K, in addition to the 1K for today’s cardiology consult. We’ll need to do some serious fundraising for Maeve!

One week after Betty arrived, the puppies were born!
Previously . . . On Sunday, 2/11/24
A Good Samaritan in Victorville reached out to us for help! After noticing a stray Cocker mix wander through her neighborhood for a few days, she took her in on Sunday only to discover that she was pregnant!
WE RALLIED A VOLUNTEER TO HELP US, AND SHE MADE THE 4 HOUR TRIP TO RETRIEVE HER - IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! WE’RE CALLING THIS SWEET GIRL BETTY, AND HAVE SET HER UP WITH A SAFE SPACE TO GIVE BIRTH, WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT MAY HAPPEN SOON! WE ARE IN CONTACT WITH OUR VETERINARIANS ABOUT BETTY, SO THAT THEY CAN ADVISE US IF ANY PROBLEMS ARISE.
Stay tuned for updates about Betty as we learn more about her. Follow her here on his webpage, on Facebook, and on our other social media.
We rely on support in the form of small donations and volunteers. Please consider donating any amount to help us meet our rescue expenses which include medical, transport, and general care for rescued dogs awaiting adoption!
No amount is too small - and each donation is very much appreciated!
