Reiki’s Story:

This beautiful beagle with the cute overbite joined Camp Cocker as part of our Freedom Flight program in February 2024. Estimated to be just a couple of years old, she had been rescued by the Huurhun Zulzaga shelter in Mongolia. Temperatures drop down to 35 degrees below zero in the winters there; if Reiki hadn’t frozen to death, there are hunters who are hired to get rid of stray dogs on the street. Sadly, there are no good options for stray dogs in Mongolia unless one of the two underfunded rescues there takes them in. We are thankful that they were able to save Reiki, who is such a sweet little lady.

Now living in Northern California, Reiki quickly bonded with her new dad and enjoys following him around. He has taught her to "sit" for treats and tells us Reiki is very food-motivated and is a really smart girl. He shares that, as she becomes more comfortable there, Reiki has also become more rambunctious showing her young dog energy! She is particularly energetic after meals where she likes to run crazily around the house and roughhouse with her dad. He has to let her know the limits, but she's still quite young and energetic. She sometimes barks at strangers and other dogs and possesses that magical dog sense of knowing if someone is outside the door without seeing them. They are working on curbing her guarding behavior. Reiki is great at following her nose and quickly learned her way around their apartment complex, leading him to their door. She travels well in cars and the two have many exciting road trips to look forward to!
