Sprout’s Story:
Tiny Sprout joined Camp Cocker in November 2021 when we found him at the Downey animal shelter needing urgent medical attention. This sweet little French bull dog was very underweight and would vomit up his meals immediately after eating. He’d clearly had this issue for quite some time before being relinquished to the shelter. We took Sprout to the emergency hospital due to concerns of failure to thrive. They suspected a hiatal hernia but, because of his weight, could not yet perform surgery on him because of the anesthesia risk. We were given his GI meds and instructed on how to hold him upright, feeding him in tiny bites that would allow him to keep “some” of the food down, and how to intermittently provide him with small amounts of water to keep him hydrated. Thanks to the kind donation of a Bailey Chair, feeding time was a bit easier for Sprout.
In December, an endoscopy showed that Sprout had Pyloric Hypertrophy and he was taken into surgery. His abdominal surgery was difficult, but the bronchial airway surgery went easier. When Sprout was finally discharged from the hospital, he had loads of medication and lots of care instructions! Then in February, Sprout went back in for his hiatal hernia surgery, and we were so relieved when he again made it through!
Sweet Sprout, also called Brutus, was adopted by his awesome foster parents, who had put so much time and love into caring for him. Most days, Sprout is able to eat without regurgitating too much, but he’ll always be a little different and need that extra care. He has two Frenchie brothers that he has a blast running and playing with, and he likes playing with his stuffed toys. Sprout couldn’t have asked for a better home.
