Summer

Adopted SEPTEMBER 2022!

Summer’s Story:

Sweet Summer joined Camp Cocker Rescue in September 2022 when she was 1 year old after we’d partnered with the Humane Society of San Diego to take in some beagles fated for a life of pain and suffering. Over 4000 beagles had been rescued from the inhumane conditions of a high volume commercial breeder, known as Envigo, a research organization that works with the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Beagles are a naturally docile breed that is highly sought by drug companies to do experiments on. The Envigo beagles were confiscated by federal authorities due to dozens of violations and a lengthy history of mistreatment. The American Humane Society helped out by distributing these beagles to Humane Society locations all around the U.S.. Summer flew from Virginia to San Diego, CA along with 108 others. She was one of four beagles that joined Camp Cocker that day.

Summer was adopted by her foster family who picked her up in San Diego, along with another Envigo beagle, named Zoey. The girls were warmly welcomed into their new family in Southern California, which includes two other rescued doggies. Charlie and Max love having sisters! They cuddle and play with them all day long. Summer’s mom is sure that Max is the reason Summer has done so well. He is so sweet to her.

Sometimes Summer is light and playful and other times she is afraid. She is pretty scared on a leash but is getting better. The saddest thing is that she will wake up suddenly at night startled and she’ll growl. Her mom cuddles her and talks to her until she can go back to sleep. Summer’s favorite thing is sleeping right next to her mom, which she has done since her very first night there. We are so grateful when adopters are willing to take on rescued dogs who may need some extra patience and a gentle introduction to a world that, until now, hasn’t treated them as well as it should have. Summer will only know life as a cherished family member from now on.

From Summer’s adopters: “We just love her and are still so glad to be part of this journey for her to live the best life forever.”
